Misty Lane Cattle is located in northwest Ocala on 400 acres of prime pastureland. Each winter we produce about 100 Wagyu F1 calves using fullblood registered Wagyu bulls and Angus cows. The F1 designation means the calf is 50% Wagyu and 50% Angus. The combination produces a marbled, tender and delicious beef.
Each year, we reserve a group of our calves to sell to friends, neighbors, vendors and others. These calves remain under our care for the first 9 months as they are under our maturity protocol. At the end of the 9 months, they can be picked-up or remain with us and graduate to our 12-month growth protocol. At the end of this 21-month period, they are ready for harvest.
After birth, the calves are placed in our maturity program where they remain with their mothers in the open pasture. They are provided grain in addition to their mother’s milk and pasture grass. They are weaned at about 6-8 months of age. We use fence line weaning to reduce stress on the calf and the mother. Once the stress of weaning is over, the calves frolic in the pastures and graduate to our growth program.
The cows in the growth program are fed an all-natural diet of pasture grass, grain and minerals. We use a strict protocol for both feed and care to enhance the natural condition of the cows. This protocol should result in a live weight of about 1,000 pounds at an age of 21 months.
A 1000-pound average steer should produce about 400 pounds of boneless, trimmed beef once cut to your specification. While MLC does not harvest the cows, there are several high-quality, USDA approved butcher shops in the area that can prepare and package the beef to your exact specifications. We can help arrange the harvest and transportation of your cow.
The initial cost of the calf is based on the birth weight. The monthly cost of the maturity and growth programs covers board, feed, vaccinations and other ordinary and usual care. The calf is placed under the Misty Lane Cattle umbrella and receives the same care as our calves.
The calves and cows under our care will live a natural life, free to roam and graze in open pastures. They will receive a high-level of care.
We do not use growth hormones or antibiotics. We do not use pesticides on our pastures, just fertilizer per the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences best practices protocol. We offer the highest level of transparency, traceability and accountability in our care for these animals.
While Misty Lane Cattle, LLC sells live cattle, not finished beef, we do harvest a cow each year to assess the quality of the beef and for other marketing and sampling programs. As the photographs show, our cows produce exceptionally well-marbled beef that is moist, tender and delicious.
Misty Lane Cattle is part of a consumer movement to better understand where our food came from and what was done to it, especially in the case of live animals like cattle. The Misty Lane Cattle spend their entire life on our farm in Ocala, Florida. We do not use growth hormones or antibiotics on the cattle. We do not use pesticides on the pastures. There is complete traceability of everything our calves and cattle are feed, from beginning to end. The result is not only delicious product, but a level of accountability that is rare today.
